How to get to Munich Airport by Train

Passengers at Munich Airport can travel to the city by train from the Munich Airport Station. The train station is located on Level 02 of the airport’s Central Area. At the Visitor’s Park (Besucherpark), there is a second station, which provides access to the cargo and maintenance areas, the P41 long-term parking area and the administrative buildings.

Munich Airport Station consists of the S-Bahn on rail lines S1 and S8. Trains on both lines travel to the Main Station in Munich – Hauptbahnhof. The traveling time is around 45 minutes, with the S8 line slightly faster. Trains on the S1 line travel via Neufahrn, Moosach, Liam, Munich Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz, with the last stop at Ostbahnhof. Trains on the S8 line travel via Ismaning, Ostbahnhof, Isartor, Marienplatz, Karlsplatz/Stachus, Main Hauptbahnhof, Liam, Pasing, and lastly Geltendorf.

Passengers can transfer to mainline and regional train services at the Main Hauptbahnhof, Ostbahnhof or in Pasing.

Tickets can be purchased at Munich Train Station from vending machines or the ticket counter. Train tickets must be validated at one of the ticket stamping machines before boarding the train. Trains travel from the airport throughout the day and night. Between the hours of 6:00 and 22:00, there are about six departing trains per hour.

Tips for using the Munich S-Bahn services

• Make sure your train car is labeled ‘Flughafen’ when traveling to Munich Airport. They are usually towards the back of the train (the train splits at Neufahrn).
• Train schedules are available from the brochure racks in the airport.
• Luggage carts can be used free of charge from the baggage-claim area to the station platform.
• The railway system in Munich is the MVV, which has two rapid-transit networks – the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn. The two systems are tightly integrated and use the same ticketing scheme. The S-Bahn are red and white trains, and the U-Bahn trains are blue.

Tickets for the S-Bahn or U-Bahn

• The Einzelfahrkarten are the most expensive and are just for a single journey. Tickets can be bought for a short trip in a single zone, or for longer trips with a number of zones. Your total ticket trip can be used for the tram or bus service as well.
• The Streifenkarten (stripe tickets) can be used for multiple journeys or by several passengers at the same time. One or more stripes are validated for each trip, depending on your destination and the number of passengers using the ticket.
• Tickets that can be used for the whole day are called Single-Tageskarten or Partner-Tageskarten. They can be used as many times as needed from the time of validation to 6 am the next morning. Tickets vary depending whether you are an individual passenger or a group of passengers (groups can be up to five people).
• Tourists will find the CityTour Card useful, as it includes public transportation and discounts for the attractions and museums in Munich. They can be bought in one-day or three-day versions.

Disabled passengers are able to use the S-Bahn trains to reach Munich Airport. Wheelchair-friendly elevators lead from the train station to the ground floor (Level 03) of the airport’s central area. Visually impaired passengers can follow the tactile floors that lead to the elevator for Level 03. On Level 03, floor markings will direct you to the information desk or to the washrooms next to the Airbräu restaurant. Terminal 2 can be reached from the rail platform, and tactile floor markings are from the terminal entrances on Level 03 to an elevator. Once on Level 04, floor markings lead to desk 445, which is dedicated to passengers with special needs. Directions to desk 445 are available in Braille at the Terminal 2 entrances.
