How to get to Munich Airport by Bus

Passengers at Munich Airport can travel by bus to areas within Munich and to other cities in the surrounding area. Buses used at the airport are the Lufthansa Airport Buses and the MVV buses. MVV is the ‘Munich Transport and Tariff Association’, which manages the railway services, tramlines, city and regional buses.

At Munich Airport, the bus stops are located directly in front of the Central Area on Level 03 at Terminal 1, on the street level (areas A and D), and at Terminal 2’s north curbside area on Level 04.

Munich Lufthansa Airport Buses

The Lufthansa Airport bus is a popular alternative to the S-Bahn train system. They are a bit more expensive than the rail services. Passenger from any airline may use the Lufthansa Airport Buses.

The Lufthansa buses are managed by Autobus Oberbayern and are a comfortable and convenient way to travel to Munich. Buses depart every 20 minutes from Munich Airport, and travel to the Munich North Stop (Nordfriedhof) and the main Hauptbahnhof (train station) in Munich. From both of these stops, passengers can continue their journey on the S-Bahn/U-Bahn underground subway system. Traveling by bus to the main Hauptbahnhof takes approximately 45 minutes. Traffic jams are avoided by using 7 alternative routes. Between the airport and Schwabing (Nordfriedhof) travel time is around 30 minutes.

From the airport, buses depart between the hours of 6:20 and 21:40. From Hauptbahnhof, buses leave for the airport between 5:10 and 19:50. Bus tickets can be bought on the bus from the driver.

Munich MVV Bus Transportation and other bus services

The Ingolstädter Express Bus X109 travels from Munich Airport to Ingolstadt, up to 13 times a day. The nearby cities of Freising, Erding and Markt Schwaben can be reached by the MVV bus services. MVV Bus 635 travels to Freising three times per hour. At Freising, passengers can use regional train connections to Regensburg, Passau and Landshut.

MVV buses run from Munich Airport to the München Messe exhibition center during times of large exhibitions and shows. Tickets and additional information is available from the Service Center on Level 03 of the Munich Airport Center (MAC). Admission tickets for the trade fairs can be purchased in advance. They will then include the Messe München’s MVV trade fair ticket, which allows for free transportation on buses, trains and trams, to and from the trade fair grounds. Buses depart for the fair grounds every 30 minutes and the journey takes around 45 minutes.

There are other bus transfer services that provide transportation to Salzburg, Innsbruck and other nearby Austrian cities and Bavarian towns. These services need to reserve in advance, as they only run on demand.

Tickets for the MVV Bus services may also be used for the U-Bahn (underground) and S-Bahn (urban railway) trains, as well as for the 10 tramlines in Munich. Tickets are purchased at vending machines, ticket offices or from the bus and tram drivers. Tickets can be bought for a single journey or striped tickets can be purchased for multiple trips. The actual fare depends on the number of zones that are traveled. Tickets must be validated.

Visually impaired passengers using the bus to reach Munich Airport should get off at Terminal 2. There is a tactile guidance pathway from the middle entrance to Terminal 2 (Level 04) that leads the way to desk 445 for passengers with special needs. At the entrance there is also an information board in Braille explaining the way to desk 445.
